England coaching appointments and updates
England Touch has announced the appointments of the Head Coaches for the Men’s Open, Women’s Open and Mixed Open teams for the next World Cup cycle until the 2023 tournament.
Tim Osborne and Justin Conway remain the Head Coaches for the Men’s Open and Mixed Open respectively, with Ben Powell the new Head Coach for the Women’s Open team.
Powell was regional lead for the Midlands’ successful Nationals campaign in 2018, the latest in a long line of coaching achievements. He has represented England at multiple international tournaments and as a Technical Director he played an important role in the growth of coaching courses and The Nationals.
Powell succeeds Simon Clare, who coached England to the 2016 and 2018 European Touch Championships titles and fifth place in the 2019 Touch World Cup. Head of Elite Performance, Sammie Phillips wanted to personally thank Simon Clare for his dedication to the Women’s Open Team during the previous four-year cycle, the many training sessions and tours attended, hours behind the scenes and personal coaching development efforts, in particular travelling to Australia to upskill both himself and his team in the New South Wales State Cup competition.
“The Women’s Open Team has developed a great amount over the past few years and I’d like to thank Simon for all his hard work in this regard and dedication to the improvement of his team during his time as Head Coach,” she said.
“We believe that Ben Powell will be able to build on this success over the next four years working with a talented group of athletes that is gaining experience and quality with each passing year.
“Tim and Justin have proven themselves in their roles, with Tim winning the Euros and then finishing fifth in the World Cup losing just one game during the entire tournament. Meanwhile Justin coached the Mixed Open to the Euros semi-finals and to sixth place in the World Cup, a massive achievement given the fact that 17 players made their England debuts for the Mixed Open in those two tournaments.
“The Opens teams are in a good place, and we believe we have the right Head Coaches to take them forward until the 2023 World Cup.”
England Touch is now recruiting Head Coaches for the Seniors and Masters teams plus Assistant Coaches for all teams for the 2019-23 World Cup cycle.
Applications for these positions must be received no later than Friday, July 5th, 2019.
