Coventry University researching concussion awareness

As with every responsible sporting national governing body, the England Touch Association is always keen to understand the existing knowledge of its community across a variety of areas, which is why the Association’s management is welcoming some new independent research by Coventry University into the understanding of knowledge which exists within the sport among key stakeholders of concussion and brain injury, medical training, and the willingness to engage in further education to protect Touch players from concussion.

While there has been some work in other sports that has focused on such knowledge and understanding of concussion, to date there has been no similar focus within the sport of Touch.

Key stakeholders include players, coaches, medics, referees and parents/guardians, and views across these groups are welcomed.

Those who complete the survey will be asked about their views on concussion reporting, their knowledge of concussion and their attitudes towards concussion. They will be asked to provide brief information on sex, age and time spent involved with Touch, followed by a series of questions to inform the researchers about participants’ knowledge of concussion, and some scenario-based questions.

Participation is voluntary, and individuals can opt out at any stage, as well as retract their responses to the questionnaire. Responses will be fully anonymised, and the survey will take between 15 and 20 minutes to complete.

By contributing, participants will be providing information which may go on to improve safety within the sport of Touch, potentially developing education programmes that will benefit the wider Touch community. Information collected may also go on to provide further areas of research within the sport of Touch.

The survey closes at the end of April 2023.
