Atlantic Cup brings a new look for international Youth Touch next summer
The Federation of International Touch (FIT) has today announced that the inaugural Atlantic Youth Touch Cup will be bringing some of the world’s best Youth Touch teams to the University of Nottingham in England in July 2023.
In July 2022, FIT announced that the postponement of the Youth Touch World Cup had provided the sport’s peak body with the opportunity to make international Youth Touch more accessible to more nations by creating two new events, one for nations of the Pacific region and another for nations from Europe, Africa, America, and the Middle East.
FIT Director, Mike Abromowitz, said: “We can now confirm the Atlantic Youth Touch Cup will be launched in July 2023 and will be heading to the University of Nottingham, a venue which has been the focus of European international Touch for the last two European Touch Championships.”
The University of Nottingham proved an outstanding host of international events at the 2018 and 2022 Euros and will be welcoming Male, Female and Mixed teams in the 20s and 18s categories between July 20th and 23rd, 2023.
Consistent with the European Junior Touch Championships, a Mixed 15 category will also be held.
Abromowitz added: “As well as providing outstanding playing facilities, the University of Nottingham will also be the host venue for accommodation, making for a festival of Touch that will live long in the memory!
“The England Touch Association has shown repeatedly over the last few years that it can stage outstanding international competitions, with the University of Nottingham becoming a home for these events.
“We’re delighted to be confirming that the inaugural Atlantic Youth Touch Cup will be held in the heart of England and are looking forward to a memorable few days next July.”
England Touch Association Chief Executive, Chris Simon, says that the Association is honoured to host the first Atlantic Youth Touch Cup.
“FIT’s decision to split the Youth Touch World Cup into two competitions will make international Youth Touch more accessible to more nations, and it will be a privilege to host the first Atlantic Youth Touch Cup next summer,” he commented.
“The University of Nottingham has become a fantastic partner for our sport, and we are already working closely with the team there to plan what we believe will be a great event.”
“Youth Touch is growing rapidly here in England, both in schools and universities as well as within clubs, and we will be looking to showcase Touch as a sport for recreation and enjoyment as well as at the elite level during the course of the weekend.”
Abromowitz concluded: “At FIT, we are really excited about how the Atlantic Youth Touch Cup can grow our sport across Europe, Africa, America and the Middle East and hopefully encourage more youngsters to participate in this great sport that shares common ground with other catch and pass sports such as American Football, Rugby Union and Rugby League.”
